Can a Real Man Be Vegetarian?

May 11th, 2011

So, recently, I saw this question come across my email in an Ask Men A List newsletter blast. The information resource for all things men had it’s own take: “there’s something inherently manly about meat that we just can’t seem to shake. Is it the primal urge to hunt and gather? Our desire for Burger King’s new Meat Monster sandwich? Or is it just that nothing says ‘manhood’ like charring some flesh over an open flame?”

And of course, I have my take as well: Yes, a real man can be a vegetarian if he is from India! An American guy, however? As the Ask Men A List points out, that’s a bit more interesting… can you show me a vegetarian who is a manly man who can earn a living to support his family, who has a preference for women and doesn’t have grizzly wild hair and sandals with long yellow toenails or “white-boy” dreads? It seems that these are the types that stereotypically go meatless in their diets, right? I’m not trying to be rude here – just stating the facts. This might not always be the case, but it sure is the trend for American men. You guys know I am one that thinks that wellness has all different looks, but really, thinking of the American vegetarian man makes me imagine that skinny raw foodie guy. Just the picture of such a vegetarian guy makes me feel like I will have to protect him if I were to walk down the street with him.

I know my Cali friends are a little peeved at me now, but I have yet another thing that I have got to say about these male veggie types. Prepare yourself because this is also very unsexy. These men take themselves too seriously and have absolutely no sense of humor, so my only conclusion is that there must be something in animal flesh that makes the rest of us laugh.

I’ll hang out with y’all as long as you stop looking down your noise at my love of buffalo burgers (I had a great Buffalo Burger at No Name Saloon on Main Street in Park City – lots of manly men in that place – you know… the hunting and fishing type. They even had that hunting stuff on the TV over the bar). Power to the vegetarians, but I am a fan of meat and manly meat-eating guys!
