WARNING: Fat May Be Bad For Your Health

November 11th, 2010

I am amazed that there is so much advertising dollars being spent telling people that cigarettes MAY be bad for your health and tobacco MAY cause cancer. I know the wordings of these warnings are carefully selected as well as the pictures.

It is also amazing to me that no one has started an ad campaign to say the Being overweight MAY be bad for your health.

Am I missing something? Decades of medical research show that tobacco is a highly associated with the development of cancers as well as other ailments. Decades of research also tells us that excess weight and obesity is highly associated with even more ailments than are cigarettes and tobacco. So tell me, the next time I watch that show with the overweight host or overweight actors and actresses, will the the words appear at 4pm across the screen daily “WARNING: Fat May be bad for your health”? When I turn on that latest sitcom with people trying to accept themselves as they are, will there be the public service announcement stating ” WARNING: Fat has been shown to cause disease and death”?

Explain to me why Americans have are so comfortable wit the demonization of cigarettes and tobacco. We put people who want to smoke outside in the cold to partake in their habit if they must. We talk of the ills of secondary smoke and we feel self-righteous and good about ourselves in shunning smokers as we realize that being around them and their smoke really is bad for our own health.

Guess what? Numerous studies that appear in prestigious medical journals bring out the same thing about being overweight  and even being around overweight people. A pregnant woman who smokes gives her baby a higher chance of suffering from asthma. A overweight pregnant woman gives her baby a higher chance of being obese and later on having diabetes and heart disease. The consequences of fat and obesity far outweigh those of cigarettes and tobacco, alcohol use and abuse as well as prescription and non-prescription illicit drug abuse.

When are we going to stop playing around with feelings and semantics and start ad campaigns to combat fat?
